As KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer make their way back to the Indian cricket team after recovering from injuries, they are now taking part in practice matches at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru. This is the final stage of their comeback journey after dealing with thigh (Rahul) and back (Iyer) injuries.
Throughout this week, Rahul and Iyer are expected to be a part of this training, which will help the national selectors understand how they're performing in a match-like setting. This information will help the selectors decide on India's Asia Cup squad, which they plan to announce by August 20.
Head coach Rahul Dravid mentioned that a few players are returning from injuries. He expressed that these players will get chances to play in the Asia Cup. He also shared that there's a one-week camp in Bengaluru starting from August 23, where the team will assemble as a one-day squad and take things step by step.
Recently, BCCI confirmed that Iyer and Rahul have started batting in nets and undergoing fitness drills again. The delay in announcing the Asia Cup squad is to give selectors more time to evaluate their performance and give them a better chance to be part of the tournament, which is a kind of practice for the World Cup later on.
Before heading to Sri Lanka for the Asia Cup, India's players will undergo a conditioning camp in Bengaluru from August 23-29. The tournament begins on September 2 with India facing Pakistan.
The selectors are considering the Asia Cup as a kind of cutoff for selecting the World Cup team. However, there could be exceptions since India has ODIs against Australia before the World Cup. Currently, BCCI needs to announce a preliminary World Cup squad by September 5 and can make changes until September 27.
Rahul and Iyer are two of the four players who are aiming to make comebacks. Jasprit Bumrah and Prasidh Krishna are also included in the group that will be touring Ireland.
Rahul is India's preferred wicketkeeper in ODIs if he's fully fit, and he's likely to play in the middle order along with Iyer, who has a strong record at No. 4. In Iyer's absence, selectors tried out various options during the recent ODI series in the Caribbean.
Iyer hasn't played cricket since March due to a back surgery, while Rahul had a thigh injury during IPL 2023. Both underwent surgeries and have been in rehab at NCA.
Prasidh and Bumrah, on the other hand, went through similar practice matches at NCA before their selection for the Ireland tour. Recently, Prasidh played for Mysuru Warriors in the Maharaja T20 Cup, his first major game in nearly a year.
